Devotional - January 12, 2017
Scripture: Mark 4 , Proverbs 1
Devotional: Here I am today. I missed my first devotional yesterday. I felt pretty sad at the end of the day, but it was just non-stop for me yesterday. Going from one place to another, plus not waking up on time, I didn't set myself up for success, but today is a new day!
I know that I have been discussing mostly the book of Genesis, but as I am reading both old and new testament I was drawn to something that Jesus said in Mark chapter four verse twenty four and twenty five. He said this, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. 25 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.” How many of us need to listen more than we speak or even do? I raise both of my hands on this. I am guilty of making the first steps or not taking take to listen to what God wants. I said it before, but I want more of God this year so listening to His voice and the guidance of the Holy Spirit will be one of the most important things if not the most important thing of it all. But it is one thing to hear and it is another thing to obey.
It all goes back to relationship, plain and simple. Relationship is the driving force behind all that we seek in God and from God.
I can openly admit that I have felt the tug of God in my life to act upon something, but neglected it or ignored it. Doing this will only put me further away from God. God not only wants lip service, but he desires obedience more than anything else and I can only be obedient to him if I am spending time with him and building my relationship with Him. It all goes back to relationship, plain and simple. Relationship is the driving force behind all that we seek in God and from God. I believe that when Jesus says, "Listen" he is saying more than the actual word is implying. He is also saying "Obey". Read the two verses again, but replace listen with obey. It makes more sense and goes even deeper.
Check out what Proverbs 1:7 says, "Fear of the lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."
God is seeking out people that our honoring him with their obedience. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be a sayer, I want to be a doer. I want my words to honor my actions and my actions to honor my words. At the end of the day this is all that matters. What does it matter that I have a gain a huge ministry, financial success or influence and power, but do not love God. In other words my love for God should be first before anything else. Proverbs 3 says: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
Prayer: I pray that God begins to shine light in areas that you have not fully surrendered to Him completely. I pray that you begin to have a deep desire to go further in God and hear his voice like never before in your life.
Challenge: In your prayer time or whenever you can take 5-10 minutes and just be silent. Turn off everything around you and even everything in you ( I mean your brain!). Put yourself in position to hear the voice of God in your life. Listen deeply and let the Holy Spirit comfort you and bring you strength today. Also invite God and His counsel into your everyday life and decisions. Let him guide on everything.
